About

Slurp is a mobile app that revolutionises the way people choose where to dine. It provides a comprehensive platform for users to access restaurant reviews, ratings, and recommendations from fellow foodies. It addresses the decision fatigue by offering an innovative "Cravings Roulette" feature. Users who are uncertain about their cravings can engage in a fun and interactive swiping game, similar to Tinder, where they swipe through intriguing eateries based on location.

This case study delves into the intricacies of psychological decision-making in the context of food establishment choices. It outlines the development of a mobile app that intricately caters to users' objectives and obstacles.

Slurp presents a dynamic blend of captivating deals and interactive selection methods akin to games. Enriched with vibrant visuals and a user-friendly interface, the app alleviates decision-related stress, offering a delightful experience amid a perplexing task. Slurp caters specifically to individuals grappling with the challenge of choosing a dining destination.

01 the frustration

iphone message

We've all experienced it – the endless loop of discussions when attempting to plan a meal with someone. It's a familiar cycle of uncertainty, circling back to the same conversations about "where" or "what." Despite its apparent simplicity, I've personally found that I can lose hours scrolling through Google, dining apps, and social media, immersing myself in countless reviews. And yet, the frustration remains, as I struggle to pin down a single dining destination.

02 the opportunity

The abundance of dining options often transforms the simple act of choosing a restaurant into a stressful endeavour. For those who grapple with indecision, this can become a genuine headache.

Studies have revealed that even couples are not immune to disagreements stemming from food choices, with the dreaded question "What do you want for dinner?" being a common source of friction. The impact of food-related indecisiveness goes beyond just the meal—it can lead to heightened stress and frustration, potentially sowing seeds of tension in relationships.

As a response to this challenge, I set out to develop a solution that could alleviate the stress of food decisions and transform them into a more enjoyable experience.

03 research

Assumptions about Characteristics
  • People spend (waste) a lot of time deciding on where to eat.
  • Singaporeans are Foodies that like to explore food options.
  • Singaporeans love deals regardless.
  • Singaporeans love reading up on food and/or cafe reviews.
Assumptions about Emotions
  • Singaporeans feel awkward or uncomfortable when deciding on where to eat especially in group settings.
  • People get more stressed out when they have more options.

I conducted user interviews involving 10 participants to delve into the challenges they encountered and to gain insights into the key considerations they prioritise when selecting a dining venue.

Taking a more in-depth approach, I delved into research articles to comprehend the underlying reasons behind the struggle of decision-making when it comes to choosing a dining spot. Drawing from my background in psychology, I rekindled my knowledge of two theories that significantly impact the decision-making process.

Tyranny of choice (Schwartz, 2013)
  • When presented with a large number of options, people tend to get overwhelmed with choice that it paralyses them
  • The missed opportunities and benefits of options that are not chosen when a certain choice is made can be mentally costly and cause distress.
  • Somewhere between 8 - 15 is the optimal number of choices
Scarcity Theory (Wu et al., 2021)
  • When people are faced with the possibility of having to go without an item, they often times will buy it, with no regard to whether or not it is actually needed
  • Stems from a sense of urgency that develops when an item is perceived to be scarce

05 the making of Slurp

From the data I collected, I tried to imagine what my desired user experience would entail, and created an experience map which captured the user’s journey and emotional results at each touchpoint they perform within the app.

Using these insights, I could then determine the specific actions and features to prioritise. I crafted a sitemap based on these conclusions, aiming to cultivate a playful and exploratory journey for my target users who often grapple with indecisiveness in their dining choices.

The architecture and interaction design played a pivotal role in establishing a seamless and stress-free user experience. The sitemap served as a blueprint, outlining the app's structure and categorisation of content, while pinpointing key primary and secondary pages. To ensure a fluid journey, I developed user flows that depicted the users' navigation throughout the app, optimising pathways for efficiency.

06 branding

Slurp's branding is a visual reflection of its mission to transform dining decisions. The dynamic blend of yellow and pink serves a purpose: yellow enhances focus and joy, aiding choice-making, while pink soothes stress. This palette embodies Slurp's commitment to making food choices delightful and hassle-free.

Opting for Kollektif and Hauora as the sans serif fonts was a conscious decision.
Their casual and friendly nature fosters approachability, perfectly aligning with Slurp's user-centric approach.

07 retrospective

Takeaways
  • Integrating insights from white paper research and validating them through user feedback has been pivotal in shaping my conclusions.
  • Creating a clear sitemap and user flow contributed to a seamless and intuitive navigation experience.
  • Elevating a fundamental problem by infusing personalisation and expressive design has enriched the user experience.
Challenges
  • With the timeline of this project, I could only focus on the top prioritised features to meet my project goals. I feel that I could have developed, tested and iterated on the main swiping section better.
Moving Forwards

There is still a lot more to explore with Slurp.

What if a user wants to use a specific deal that is locked for that day? How can we ensure that people do not get uncomfortable when choosing a place for their friends?

Wishlist for if I had more time...

  • User research with more participants & include a more diverse group.
  • Develop a user persona
  • Carry out user testing
  • Future iterations of prototype
  • Adding smoother transitions and animations to dig deeper into the flow of the app would have added another layer to the design.
